Hello! I need to know how to change the spark plugs on a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier for my girlfriend. I was hoping someone could provide some sort of photo or diagram for how to access and repair and properly gap the spark plugs for this model of car. We're getting ready to make a cross country trip in this car, unfortunately, and I would like to do some minor repairs before we head out. However, I've never worked on a Cavalier, so any help is appreciated.
Answer:
First you'll need a 3/8 drive 5/8 deep-well magnetic socket from Auto Zone and a couple of 3/8 short extensions. Plan on replacing the spark plug wires if they've never been done also. Pick up AC-Delco wires and plugs from your local Chevrolet dealer. Twist the spark plug boots clockwise and counter clockwise before attempting to pull them off. When installing new spark plug wires wipe on some silicone ignition grease inside both boots on each wire.
Next spark plug gap should be .060 for the following brands and part # plugs for that car: NGK - N67164 or AC-Delco AC41-942.
