I get this issue from Yahoo answer. The following the problem : I just got back from a road trip and I am now seeing my check engine light on and when I go around corners, the oil light comes on for a second. I just took it into sears auto center and the guy said that it is against their policy to work on cars that are low on oil because their might be bigger problems. Also, could the check engine light have something to do with the oil or is it a separate issue? The car is making a ticking noise. I'm too scared to drive it so I'm trying to arrange a mobile mechanic to come check it out. Any insight would be so helpful!
Here's one of the answers:
BEFORE
adding oil, check the oil level to see whether the oil level is low or
not, because to much oil can damage an engine too, to much oil is not as
critical as to less oil but critical enough to avoid.
=> The main point
Checking the oil level is done by the dipstick, its usually a long thin flexible metal strip that sticks in the engine- block, that is that big main bulk. The dipstick has a scale on the tip that says "min" and "max". to check the oil level, the car needs to be on ground level and
the
engine should be off for a few hours. To reliably read the oil level on
the scale of the dipstick, the dipstick should then be pulled out, the
scale of the dipstick wiped clean by a tissue, then put back in and out
again for a reading. the oil level should be 3/4 of the max. if there is
no oil on the dipsticks scale, that means the oil level is even below
the minimum (min) oil level, if so, the engine should NOT be started
until some oil is added into the engine. => The main point

When filling the engine with oil, it does not need an oil change first, except the miles to do the regular oil change are reached already. if the oil is changed, the filter needs to be changed too (else it would be like taking a shower to then put the same dirty cloth back on). How to fill oil in is like written in the beginning, there is a cap on the engine-block, that comes off, oil is then poured in and the cap put back on, usually the cap comes of with half a turn, that simple (despite the many words to tell how it all is done).
What oil and how much oil depends on what car that is, what brand and what engine version, usually 5w20 synthetic oil is good enough for all and about half a gallon is about the total capacity a cars engine holds, if there is already some oil in the engine, then there is less oil poured in (same like a cup that isn't totally empty). A more precise answer on what oil and how much oil would be possible if the brand of the car, model name and build year was known, the required oil and required volume is usually written in the cars owners manual. the owners manual is often placed in the glove compartment or some other place made for the owners manual and service-book. when oil is filled in, finally the oil level on he dipstick should be checked again to see that there isn't to much or to less oil.
Sorry, this just share it, so I can not guarantee to answer all of the above can be overcome. For it to be more clearly take it to the nearest service station.
